Brash Young Fools Seek The Enemy Within

session 9 notes

Lupin bursts into the marquee and immediately staggers back out with a mouthful of smoke, coughing and hacking. He starts slashing at the sides of the marquee to let the smoke billow out faster.

Mercutio and his greatsword buddies round on the demigrph, who has corned Amalie, the lady in waiting who proposed the maze race. The engage it in combat, which looks like it could well be long and bloody.

Thess has a dream sequence.

Lupin makes a second attempt at entering the marquee as the smoke thins out, he finds the corpse of Giselbert and then the prone form of Thess, whom he drags out of the marquee.

Mercutio bravely leaps onto the demigryph, trying to tie his shirt around its head to block its vision, as he is familiar with this practice to pacify animals. After a struggle he succeeds, and the demigrph is subdued. He leaves it with the greatswords and begins a supersonic sprint towards the marquee.

Thess has another dream sequence.

Lupin rouses Thess with a healing potion as Mercutio arrives panting on the scene. The party then CSI’s the scene with Lupin loudly protesting as to how badly they have fucked it. They find that the jade mask has been stolen, but nothing else. Mercutio finds some footprints heading into the marquee near a small cut in the back, he bribes the gold wizard with a stolen golden plate to make a cast of the footprints – which are humanoid but not quite human in shape.

Lupin and Thess investigate a smell which a guest recognised as being similar to that which she had smelled outside the rhinox cage. After much searching, they eventually find a small hole – just large enough to accommodate a crouching adult – cut into one of the border hedges. A number of protruding branches and leaves in the hole have been smeared with a foul smelling paste. Lupin tastes the paste, and gets a hint of something unfamiliar alongside the all too familiar taste of dung.

The body of the zookeeper was found torn to shreds, giselbert’s body was found to have puncture wounds that matched the cheesey wounds found on the dockland victims. Amalie hands over a throwing star she found near where the demigryph fight took place, and Mercutio investigates the subdued demigryph and finds a puncture wound with the telltale signs of the same poison. The party also finds the smokebomb casing discarded in the marquee.

The guests begin to filter out, with baerfaust returning to berate von Kaufman for using amateurs instead of his own men for security.

As the PCs arrive back in the docks, with the rain starting to beat down, they are greeted by Frederick Grosz, who has been lying low. He pays the party to escort him out of the city as he still fears greatly for his life. They agree, and the escort is suspicious but uneventful.

The party agrees to keep watch throughout the night, as their next appointment with von Kaufman was at midday.

After a brief nap in the morning, Lupin is accosted by a man in the street looking for Hans Muller the knacker, who didn’t turn up for a meeting. Lupin didn’t give enough of a shit to remember the details, but just enough to send Mercutio into a panic when the meet up. Lupin and Thess go to meet von Kaufman and Mercutio sets off to find Hans.

Von Kaufman seems upset, but still pleased with how the PCs handled themselves. When quizzed on his confrontation with the witch hunter, he admits that she accused him of knowing about the black hood, but professes that he knows nothing of this character. He also heavily implied that the behaviour of Baerfaust was very suspicious, leaving immediately prior to the happenings at the menagerie.

Hans’ house is empty and Mercutio breaks in, after tearing the place apart he finds traces of the substance smeared about. Talking to Hans’ workmates they immediately identify it as quicklime.

The three meet up and go to see Luminary Mauer. Mauer is very excited by the footprint and immediately begins talking about skaven and how he was right all along. He believes the cheesey wounds to be the work of what he calls a “crying sword”, a typical weapon of the mythical ratmen. His only other assistance in the matter is mentioning the skaven association with places humans rarely go, and finding the number 13 sacred. He asks the party to bring the effigy back to him should they find it, so that it can be destroyed. He also warns that it could be dangerous to the touch.

The party decide to go down into the sewers, on the hunt for skaven. Inside they find footprints similar to those found at the marquee, as well as another throwing star and more of the quicklime.

Finally, they approach Baerfaust, who after some convincing and much complaint of being understaffed agrees to send a patrol into the sewers.

The team does some shopping and then arrives at the menagerie. They are escorted to the grounds by state troops who have been explicitly instructed not to enter the garden party itself but to patrol the perimeter.

Von Kaufman is there, along with a sulking Baerfaust, who gives the party some time to familiarise themselves with the menagerie before the party proper begins. The animals contained in the menagerie are: a cockatrice, a giant spider, a southlands carnivorous snapper, demigryph, norscan white bear, sabretusk, giant owl, rhinox.

The guests arrive and are greeted by von Kaufman and the party. Notable guests include a halfling and the von Tuchtenhagen retinue (the man himself, a jester, a lady in waiting and a gold wizard).

The party begins with a falconry show which passes without incident. After this, the guests begin to mingle before the main event, this gives the party time to patrol a bit.

Claudia Leitdorf is sickly and escorted away. A guest complains about a terrible smell around the rhinox cage, but the party can find nothing amiss. The von Tuchtenhagen jester makes a racist joke towards the halfling, who is humiliated and angry.

A woman in a tall leather hat sweeps past the guards and into the party, creating a disturbance. She goes to Baerfaust, then Luminary Mauer and finally von Kaufman – having a loud argument with the latter. Of their conversation, Thess only manages to hear the woman say “I know what’s really going on, Graf Friedrich. I know about the man in the black hood.” After further words are exchanged between the two, she leaves the party again. Baerfaust then leaves the party.

The main event then occurs, with von Kaufman unveiling his plunder from the southlands expedition. It includes many carvings of bone, ivory and gold depicting strange and savage creatures. The main exhibits are a large gold plate, and a smoky-jade mask. As von Kaufman describes each piece, he is interrupted on the jade mask by Luminary Mauer, who declares that it is evil and must be destroyed. Von Kaufman refuses to hand it over, and after a brief exchange of heated words, the Luminary storms out of the party.

To ease the tension, one of the ladies in waiting proposes a race to the centre of the maze. A number of guests take her up on this and leave. Shortly after the guests set off, an inhuman shriek and a cry of dismay spoil everything again. The demigryph is loose.

The party immediately take off towards the hedge maze. Thessalonius starts herding the slower party goers back out of the maze and to the rest of the group. Lupin and Mercutio go after the demigryph, with Lupin running along the top of the hedges to keep up with the beast. Mercutio is joined by a couple of Baerfaust’s greatswords who have responded to the commotion.

A small explosion goes off in the marquee, and a huge smoke cloud begins to billow from it. Lupin turns back to investigate as the demigryph proves almost impervious to his arrows. Meanwhile Thess rushes into the marquee and is almost immediately overcome by the thick smoke. He finds the prone form of Giselbert, who manages to croak out “There was a figure, COFF COFF a little figure all in black, couldn’t see his face under his hood but COFF great stinking big yellow fangsGAKK” before expiring. Thess then loses consciousness himself as he can’t breath in the choking smoke…

Session 7

We ride to Clothilde’s mansion, a place of sickening, angular opulence. Mercutio has decided to have a lie down whilst the Lady fetches her physicians. I gaze at the views of Averland, and miss the dark, dappled realm of Athel Loren. Wish I could go home. If only I’d kept my widdle in.

We ride for Averheim in late afternoon, Clothilde tips up a glittering fortune – 20 shillings.

We visit Curd Weiss, and turn over his destroyed wagon. He questions us on the resistance we faced and how they were armed. Mercutio previously discovered that the enemy bandits were wielding pistols from Averheim garrison – stamped with a sad sun. Hmm.

Another 20 silver! And a feast. We feast on Halfling pastries – surprisingly excellent. Thess forgets her own name, quite drunk. The human, too.

A fancy, perfumed bearded human enters. Thess is drunk and instantly smitten, it is Graf Friedrich von Kaufman. He thanks us for our work.

To stop Thess’ ridiculous behaviour, and also mostly for fun, I engage the human in a contest. We toss a bottle and aim to shoot it out of the air. Mercutio chips the bottle – not bad, but my aim is true, and I shatter the target into a glittering vapour that descends gently and harmlessly onto the cheering onlookers. Kaufman is impressed and invites us to guard his party – for 30 shillings!!!!

Session 6

Thess and I met with Curd Weiss, who works for von Kaufman. He wants us to guard a charge and bait out local bandits. We’re promised a feast and ungodly sum if we kill the bandits and keep our bait safe!

We will have to wear some god awful human rubbish though.

Mercutio and Thess hide in the coach with a blunderbuss apiece. Our decrepit companions drive the ridiculous tasselled rig.

I leave them to their strange sweaty box and slip through the under-brush nearby, eyes pealed for assailants.

Combat Account
Sure enough, some suspicious horsemen hold up the box. I take aim at one of their pistoliers…

Staying hidden, I fire a perfect shot into the leader’s hand. He keeps hold of his pistol, miraculously. Mercutio dives out of the coach and fires his cannon. I find myself grudgingly impressed by the human.

I retreat tactically to a nearby tree. Thess blunderbuss my pursuer, an unnecessary distraction, of course, but an impressive shot. I flip off a tree and shoot my attacker in the back, leaving him barely alive for a satisfying kill.

A bandit enters the coach. One of the ancient humans battles with him while Thess pulls a knife and shanks the intruder. Thess strikes him again and he flees, for a few moments, before Thess shoots him.

Mercutio accessses unknowable reserves of energy, and dive-tackles the two wounded pistoliers, damning them to a chaotic muddy brawl.

I drag the leader away and Thess takes the other survivor.

We learn:

  • Mercenary freelance group working for the man in the black hood
  • The man in the black hood supplies bandits with leads & gunpowder, taking a cut from the robbers.
  • Black hood has contacts in inns for dead drops.

Other clues: the lead bandit had a key around his neck and worse Averland state troop colours underneath his bandit garb.

We took their key and pistols. Mercutio and the coachman are gravely injured.

Session 5

We take the silks, blackpowder and wine back to Curd. He pays us more money than I’ve ever seen except for in Thess’ place. Curd tells us the blackpowder was an order for Cpt. Baerfaust, rumoured to have allowed the death of the mad count when he was killed at Third Black Fire by the Orcs. We are offered more work tomorrow.

I have a bath at Thess’ and my mind is blown. Thess meets the bright wizardLuminary Mauer. He believes the Skaven exist, but can’t offer definitive proof. Thess posits that they could be living in the city’s sewers, slipping under cover of the high river during the rain.

Meanwhile, Mercutio engages in a madcap scheme to take over Grosz’s business and become the next target for the man in the black hood. We will miss him when he is dead, I suppose.

Baerfaust visits us in the Upright Pig in shining noisy shell with tasty firewater. Mmm. Found it hard to focus, but he asked a load of questions about the mutants we found. He’s worried about the vanishing blackpowder supplies in Averheim.

That night the rains come. Thess and I take to the rooftops while Mercutio rallied his strange-smelling goons and ordered them to patrol. Mercutio investigated the sewers, but took the coward’s way and decided that we’d return during the day.

Session 4

During an escort of a Red Arrow coach we encounter a band of mutants, who attack our caravan. I ambush the ambushers, giving Thess time to close and vanquish some enemies with a blunderbuss. I shoot everyone, and then backflip off a tree and shoot another guy. It’s awesome. Mercutio does a neat shield thing also.

After questioning the wounded mutants, we discover that the band is a cell in a wider conspiracy of groups called the Red Crown. They namedrop the man in the black hood.

We recover the wine & silks Curd asked us to find and also some rain sodden gunpowder.

Session 3

Found body in the street. Helga, another racketeer, bearing similar wounds but nastier. Dealt with an assassin’s blade using some kind of magical and/or chaotic poison.

We manhandled Grosz into a pub, the black cowl is killing off racketeers. He fled & has likely left the city.

Ute, a familiar bard is missing. Went missing on a rainy night.

Session 2

Adolphus Stark’s shipping vessel explodes, Mercutio helps put out the fire while Thess and I chase down the arsonists.

After a swift, bloody, combat the team kill one goon and restrain the other. The restrained goon reveals that he took the job at the anonymous behest of the man in the black hood’s gang.

Mercutio discovers that Stark was attacked for his inability to pay the black hood’s protection fee. The black hood gang are moving on the protection racket.

Stark promises to pay Mercutio 3 shillings. The party delivers the cheesey wound flesh taken the day before to the sun society.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
